In recognition of the development of the groundbreaking Melbourne Renewable Energy Project (MREP), a partnership between the cities of Melbourne, Port Phillip, Yarra and Moreland has been named a finalist in the Government category of the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

The MREP marks the first time in Australia that a group of local governments, cultural institutions, universities and corporations have collectively purchased renewable energy from a newly built facility.

Members have committed to purchase 88GWh of electricity per year from the yet to be built Crowlands Wind Farm near Ararat.

The approach will enable cities, corporations and institutions to take an active role in securing renewable electricity supply. It will also provide price certainty and will be critical to partner organisations achieving their CO2 reduction targets.

CEO of Sustainability Victoria, Stan Krpan, describes the project as “exceptional”.

“The MREP partners demonstrated to the judges that they have translated the principles of
sustainability into practice to achieve outstanding results for our environment and the state of our future.

“Victoria is an amazing place to live and this project is helping to keep it that way, we congratulate them as a finalist,” Mr Krpan said.

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards are the highest profile program of their kind in Victoria.
2018s finalists have been selected in ten categories. Winners will be announced at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards gala dinner at The Forum in Melbourne on Thursday 11 October.

Premier, Daniel Andrews, will also personally select two overall winners of the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award and the Premier’s Recognition Award, to be announced at the ceremony.
