The Northern Territory Government has released a tender to enhance its capability to reach the state’s net-zero emissions target by 2050 and protect its environment from climate change.
Global commitments to net-zero emissions by 2050 provide vast economic opportunities for the Territory to benefit from developing and promoting decarbonisation supply chains and pathways.
Taking advantage of these opportunities is a key feature of the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission’s final report.
The tender is calling for submissions from prospective businesses to provide the Territory Government:
- Advice on the Territory’s greenhouse gas emissions profile and likely trajectory to 2050 under different economic development scenarios
- Identify practical options for emissions reduction activities to inform possible reduction trajectories and a cost-effective reduction pathway to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050
The release of this tender falls under priority 1.1.1 of the Territory Government’s Climate Change Response Three-Year Action Plan and will assist in developing a decarbonisation plan, as recommended by the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission.
Northern Territory Minister for Climate Change, Eva Lawler, said, “The NT Government is taking its global responsibilities seriously to urgently tackle climate change and protect the environment for future generations, with the release of today’s tender.
“The Territory Labor Government knows that climate-smart policy is smart economic policy that will create new jobs for Territorians and deliver significant cost-savings to Territorians.
“Our Government’s strong environmental policy is securing our natural assets and unlocking social, cultural and economic opportunities for Territorians.”
The Territory Government said its evidence-based Climate Change Response provides the long-term vision required to protect the Territory and capitalise on the economic opportunities created by climate-smart action.
A key priority of the Climate Change Response is to understand the Territory’s emissions profile and future trajectory so a feasible and cost-effective emissions reduction pathway can be implemented.
The Northern Territory Industry Capability Network has signed off on this complex tender.
