The Victorian Government has appointed a new director for Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) in an effort to strengthen the energy safety regulator.

Marnie Williams was awarded the executive position and will be charged with continuing ESV’s work and overseeing the state government’s reforms to boost its capacity and powers.

Ms Williams has experience in regulation and community safety and assisted in developing the Taxi Services Commission and WorkSafe Victoria.

Ms Williams will act as the Chair Delegate to oversee the establishment of the three-person ESV Commission recommended by the extensive Grimes Review and endorsed by the Government.

Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said, “Marnie Williams’ experience in regulation and community safety makes her the right choice to continue this important work to build a stronger energy regulator and keep Victorians safe.

“As the industry transforms, it’s vital we have a modern, fit-for-purpose independent regulator to monitor the energy sector and hold those who do the wrong thing to account.”

This position is vital in preparing Victorian workers for an energy industry in transition, particularly in relation to the safe integration of new and emerging technologies, through relevant regulations, licensing and training.

ESV has been given more resources and a mandate to better engage with the community and hold duty holders to account, which is vitally important as the industry transforms.

Ms Williams will commence her role in March 2020, replacing former Director, Paul Fearon, who has retired after more than 10 years in the position.
