The Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is decommissioning the trial of energy wave project off the coast of Port Fairy.

An operation to remove the bioWAVE unit from waters is underway, and will tow the unit to the Port of Portland where it will be dismantled and then recycled.

The bioWAVE had ongoing technical problems, which indicated uncertainties surrounding projection viability, and resulted in the project testing phase being terminated in June 2017.

The decision to decommission the bioWAVE device was confirmed in December 2017.

DELWP will be ensuring minimal impact to marine life, the sea-bed, and nearby reef system during the decommissioning process, and that the area will be fully rehabilitated. More information on the bioWAVE project can be found here.
