Major new and ongoing energy projects are continuing across the country at a rapid pace, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. These projects, combined with funding and investment announcements, as well as emerging technologies and a unified goal of decarbonising the grid, are making it an exciting and challenging time for Australia’s energy industry.

Here is some of Energy’s most-read content over the past six or so months, providing some useful data on what the industry is most excited about, and where we see things headed.

Unsurprisingly, budget and major project announcements have proved important for our readers, with a demonstrated interest in where funding is being directed for the next 12 months.

The Federal 2021-22 Budget was announced mid-May, with more than $1.8 billion allocated for the energy sector. The Federal Government was keen to highlight the $58.6 million for the gas sector; but the lion’s share of the energy industry’s allocation went towards emissions reduction, with more than $1.2 billion allocated to this space.

In addition, the Energy audience is engaging with content focused on renewables – hydrogen in particular. In fact, for the past six months, a third of our top rating content has been focused on hydrogen!

This high-level of engagement demonstrates the industry’s forward-looking perspective on this emerging industry for Australia, and a keenness for any information they can get their hands on, whether it be project or development-focused, or technology-focused.

In addition to hydrogen’s popularity, the Energy audience is very interested and engaged with the energy transition more generally, and the renewable projects coming onto the energy scene. Some key areas of interest include solar, wind, microgrids, electric vehicles, virtual power plants and batteries.

Some of the top emerging renewable projects include:

  • Infinite Blue Energy Group (IBE)’s landmark green hydrogen project, Arrowsmith
  • AGL and the New South Wales Government’s proposed Liddell Battery
  • The Asian Renewable Energy Hub, a globally significant renewable energy project in the Pilbara
  • South Australia’s 280MW Cultana Solar Farm
  • DP Energy and Iberdrola’s $500 million hybrid wind and solar plant at Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park
  • Nexif’s expansion of its Lincoln Gap Wind Farm

And while this interest in renewable energy is substantial, there is still plenty of interest in gas,  transmission lines, and cyber security.

Some examples of non-renewable projects of interest include:

  • AGL’s Bayswater Power Station maintenance
  • Port Kembla Gas Terminal
  • Western Gas and APA Group’s West to East Coast transcontinental gas pipeline study

The energy industry is also always on the lookout for leadership developments, insights and changes, and this audience routinely engages with content in this area.

There is a lot of activity in the industry at the moment and plenty of work in the pipeline.
