Education centre, Powering Skills has launched a new Jobs and Skills Council for Energy, Gas and Renewables sector with aims to increase the workforce in renewable energy apprenticeships.

The council aims to provide a stronger, more strategic voice in ensuring that Australia’s VET sector delivers stronger outcomes for both employers and employees.

Key roles of the council include the following:

  • Identifying skills and workforce needs for the Energy sector (including gas, renewable energy and electricity generation and distribution)
  • Map career pathways across the education sector
  • Develop VET training products
  • Support collaboration between industry and training providers to improve training and assessment practice
  • Act as a source of intelligence issues affecting the sector

Powering Skills Organisation is one of ten Jobs and Skills Councils that have been set up by the Federal Government and is funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

Powering Skills Organisation CEO, Anthea Middleton, said “One of the main needs in the Energy, Gas and Renewables sector is to develop ways to increase the capacity of people commencing and completing apprenticeships.

“Driven by a changing energy sector, we wish to address infrastructure capacity and capability gaps.

“At the moment different states and organisations have access to different equipment and training modules and we want to increase the flexibility and pathways for individuals and employers. Our plan will set a critical path for identifying and addressing workforce challenges,” Ms Middleton said.

The council is set to consult with individuals within the sector for their feedback on what changes are needed in the coming months.
