The ACT Government has reached the next stage of its plan for electrification, opening up community consultations on the proposal paper for the Integrated Energy Plan.

The Integrated Energy Plan will outline the strategy for how the Territory will transform its energy systems to ensure an affordable and zero emissions energy future. Once completed, the plan will provide a clear pathway that will help deliver the transition and achieve the ACT’s legislated emissions reductions targets over the next two decades.

ACT Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury, said that setting a clear action plan for electrifying the territory will result in substantial savings.

“The ACT is the first Australian jurisdiction to be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity and to commit to phasing out fossil gas. We have set world leading emissions targets and are making the important changes that are needed to achieve them.

“Setting a clear direction for electrifying our city will mean that we cut emissions and that our community will see substantial savings as renewable electricity takes centre stage in powering homes and businesses. With rising gas costs, electrification offers a more affordable, zero emissions alternative,” Mr Rattenbury said.

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Climate Action, Andrew Barr, said that Canberra is leading the rest of the nation in its transition to sustainability.

About a third of Canberra households are already experiencing the benefits of an all-electric home, and even more are embracing sustainable technologies such as solar panels and home battery systems.

“Canberrans are embracing the objective of a net zero emissions city but there is still a way to go, and we are developing the long-term plan to get us there,” said Mr Barr.

Community consultation on the ACT’s Integrated Energy Plan is open from 1 August – 12 September 2023. Visit here for more information.
