Promising 20GWh of renewable energy, Evolution Mining’s Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro (MRPH) project has been declared state significant for its potential contribution to the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.

The project to convert Evolution’s existing open-cut Mt Rawdon gold mine into a renewable power-source was declared a Coordinated (state significant) Project by the Queensland Government’s Coordinator-General on Thursday 13 October.

The designation is intended to streamline interactions between industry and key State Government departments and agencies, this will include the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the MRPH Project.

Evolution Mining said the project’s Feasibility Study is on track for completion by mid-2023, while representatives continue engaging with Mt Rawdon First Nations Groups, communities and local government.

Evolution Mining’s Executive Chair, Jake Klein, said the project would generate value for both shareholders and Queensland residents.

“Our plan to convert Mt Rawdon into a pumped hydro renewable energy asset has the potential to create significant value to shareholders while also being a model mine closure,” Mr Klein said.

“It demonstrates that by thinking differently we can continue to contribute to the local and state communities after mine closure and support the renewable energy transition.

“Coordinated status is an important milestone and we look forward to progressing the Project by working with our communities, First Nation Partners and the Queensland Government to ensure Mt Rawdon plays a constructive role in the future of the state.”
