Iron Road has chosen the lead developer to deliver its Cape Hardy green hydrogen project, which is set to ensure energy security for South Australia while supporting the state’s decarbonisation.
Iron Road has chosen Amp Energy to head the construction of the project, following a three-month competitive offer-to-bid process.
The project is set to inject billions of dollars’ worth of investment outcomes into South Australia and create thousands of jobs. The green industrial hub, located on the Eyre Peninsula, will feature a 5GW scale green hydrogen production facility in an ideal strategic location to develop the multi-purpose, multi-user deep-sea port for hydrogen operations, along with mineral and grain exports.
Amp Energy intends to develop and build up to 5GW of electrolyser capacity over the next decade in the port precinct, delivering more than five million tonnes of green ammonia each year and fuelling South Australia’s position as a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
The planned export facility at Cape Hardy is expected to create nearly 5000 jobs during its development peak and more than 1000 positions when fully operational.
The South Australian Government has played a critical role to support the project, backed by the Federal Government’s $25 million commitment for the development of the deep-sea port to benefit current and future industries.
The leading industry event promoted the significant investment opportunities available in the State including the Cape Hardy hydrogen hub, as well as the State Government’s $593 million Hydrogen Jobs Plan – all part of a $20 billion pipeline of renewable energy projects.
South Australia Trade and Investment Minister, Nick Champion, said, “This significant investment into the State is testament to our global standing as a leader in the green energy sector.
“Projects like these will create thousands of jobs and benefit future generations across South Australia.
“Congratulations to Iron Road and Amp Energy on advancing a key project which forms part of the State’s massive renewable energy pipeline of work.”
Iron Road CEO, Larry Ingle, said, “We are delighted to be working exclusively with Amp Energy for the next nine months and beyond, on a green energy production and export development opportunity of national significance.
“This important milestone further validates Cape Hardy as South Australia’s pre-eminent hydrogen export hub of scale. Our competitive offer-to-bid process was carefully designed to screen the most capable and motivated developer looking to prioritise and advance the project quickly and judiciously.”
Amp Energy Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer, Paul Ezekiel, said, “Amp Energy’s background of developing large-scale upstream power systems globally, positions Amp Energy for the emerging opportunity of green hydrogen and provides industrial synergies.
“Amp Energy’s development of strategically located transmission-connected green hydrogen and ammonia facilities at select locations such as Cape Hardy in South Australia is critical to our continued global growth and long-term strategy.”
